Jeddah's front porch
The Jeddah Corniche is a coastal stretch of about 30 kilometers along the Red Sea, with a seaside road, parks, walkways and large outdoor sculptures. For locals it is where evenings happen: families picnic, friends walk and couples watch the sun sink into the sea.
A large waterfront section was rebuilt and opened to visitors in November 2017. It covers about 730,000 square meters along 4.2 kilometers of shoreline, with beaches, play areas, restaurants and fountains.
The giant fountain
Out in the water stands one of the most famous sights in Jeddah: a giant fountain that shoots a column of sea water hundreds of meters into the sky. It is often listed as the tallest fountain in the world and is lit at night, so it is easy to spot from the shore.
Along the promenade you will also find outdoor art, from abstract sculptures to playful oversized pieces that have become part of the city's identity.
An evening plan
Arrive about half an hour before sunset, walk the waterfront as the sky turns orange and pink, then stay for dinner by the sea once the lights come on. The evening breeze makes even warm months comfortable after dark.
Weekends are lively and crowded, so a weekday evening is calmer if you want quiet time together.
Beyond the promenade
The Corniche connects many of the places Jeddah is known for. To the south lie the old streets of Al-Balad, while further north the coast leads toward new waterfront districts and the rising Jeddah Tower.
The Red Sea itself is part of the attraction. Its waters are warm for much of the year and famous for coral reefs, and boat trips leave from marinas along the coast for snorkelling and sunset cruises.
For a simple romantic plan, pick a quiet stretch of the waterfront, bring Arabic coffee and dates and watch the fishing boats and the giant fountain as the light fades. Jeddah residents have been doing exactly that for generations.
